Resident Evil 5 Community and Berserker +1

Taking a chance...

You know, back on February 6th, when I first posted up my gamertag and PSN ID in my RE5 demo guide along with the "ok" to add me (as long as you sent me a message), I was really biting my tongue then because I didn't know what to expect based on the attitudes of some gamers that I have witnessed during online play. Not knowing what to expect and being fearful of it is the story of my life actually and is the reason why I haven't done some of the things that I want (or actually need) to do today, so i went ahead and took a chance rather than sit back and wonder what would have happened if I did but didn't.

Success...

With that in mind, you guys and gals have been SIMPLY FANTASTIC! Oh man, I have met some of the greatest people online because of my RE5 demo guide - a fun person from the Netherlands that likes to set off explosive barrels near me, a very talkative British gal that got me hooked on critical headshot responses, two very excellent young partners on both consoles (one for each, haha), an RE fan that rivals me in obsession with the series (he knows that I win though :p) and several other awesome gamers.

There is one person that I played alongside and talked him through how to take down the Executioner during gameplay - I showed him how to deal with him based on my usual run. The experience was great. I've also had numerous gamers that have wanted to see the tag team melees. Needless to say, our games were full of Chris' yell before a Haymaker or Back Hand. Those Majini didn't stand a chance, I'm afraid.

It's also been fun to make friends just based off chance meetings through the demo search engine - you know who you are. Without a certain Boss, I wouldn't be opening up the inventory to reload. There are about 8 friends that can't speak English that well, yet through the power of partner action commands, we still get things done! There is one Korean gamer that doesn't know any English at all basically, yet we bounce around just about every Majini in Shanty Town with ease.

I'll be removing my gamertag and PSN ID and the offer of playing online with me most likely tomorrow since the full release is just around the corner. Don't use my gamertag as a raincheck for the full release please unless you intend on playing the demo with me.

Looking ahead...

I'm definitely going to play alongside readers online for the full guide. I might just make Resident Evil 5 a full half year worth of dedication (or maybe longer)since there is nothing else on the horizon that I really care for (besides Bionic Commando). Let me get through with the majority of everything that I want to record for single player and then it's all online from then on, on both systems. Based on the demo, online play is the most important part to learning different tactics.

Considering I'll just be getting started sometimes after this coming Friday, I wouldn't expect anything from me until about late March or sometimes in April. I've been avoiding everything for this game outside of demo because I don't want anything ruined for me more than it already is, so the majority of the game will be new. The only portion that I have started on for the full guide up till this point is the achievements/trophies.

Tearing Through RE5...

I hate to make promises, but to be simply direct to anyone reading this, this RE5 guide is going to blow everything else that I've done up until now out of the water... with the limit of text of course. It's going to be like a dropkick to the face, I assure you. As you may have read before, I'm the type of person that is really never pleased with anything that I do. I feel that I can always do better, but I plan to do the best I can here as always. As a Greek friend on Xbox LIVE has said before in his gaming profile, that I very much agree with, "Strive for perfection".

"In my point of view you should strive for improvement through every day to become the best you can. It's the way to perfection and to the feeling that you are actually accomplishing something."

Berserker +1...

Also, as of today, March 8th, I am a year older. 29 years old and even more of a hardcore gamer than I was in my earlier years!

My day has been great so far. Along with the anticipation of things to come, it's been super!

The best Friday the 13th ever...

With all of that explosive joy and ranting out of the way... ONWARD TO FRIDAY! :D:D:D

...and back to the RE5 demo he goes.

Perhaps I came late but have to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you and wish you this year get better than the past year ^o^

Berserker said...

Thanks a lot, Seph!

Last year was great for me, so if this year is even better then, well, that would be fantastic! I have this feeling that it will be. ;)

Happy birthday as well, buddy :D Good to hear your enthusiasm is only getting stronger ;) Like you though I intend to just play through RE5 alone first before going online... and even then it'd just be with friends. Hopefully you'll have even more kickass experiences with the full game in a bit! :D I can only imagine how busy you're going to be ^_^;;

Woah, could not check you blog this past days... oh well, happy birthday anyway!

Damn, I can't figure out just how lucky I was to meet you randomly in the demo...
You're the one I have the most fun playing with, and you sure helped me A LOT getting better. (even if you did not tell me about the blog :P)

Hi, this is drake1027 (PSN), you were helping me out with the tag-team melee attacks on Shantytown?

All I can say is WOW. It looks like you've put a ton of effort into this. Like Sixth_Finger, I was really lucky to meet you online; your tips really helped me out and the demo guide is fantastic.

Wow, three great people in only about an hour apart. :D

Brian, you should really try out the host and joining search a few times. It helps you to pick up quite a few new things from other players. It has GREATLY helped with that demo guide of mine.

In all honesty, I usually don't mention my blog to anybody. I let people find it through one of my guides... or when they get bored and google my username then find out about it later. :p I feel as if I'm pushing it on people if I mention it to them. On PSN I can't advertise myself like I can on Xbox LIVE through the bio. :(

I'm just as lucky to have met each of you too. :D Each of you three make great partna's.

Three. More. Days.

Haha, sorry about my ongoing hesitance to do random online games, but considering how I like to streamline my game time I tend to stick the the closer ones ;) I'll do it for fighting games but for longer, sustained games, I will pick my spots. No offense to the internet of course.

I have just a quick (and random) question: Got Half-Life 2, Episode 1 for the PC?

Berserker said...

You really should give some online RE5 demo play a shot with the searches, just for kicks. I'd recommend a Public Assembly run.

Nah, no Half-Life 2: Episode 1 for PC. I do have The Orange Box for Xbox 360, just haven't gotten around to it yet. :)

Hey there :) I still live. I contracted RSI a few months ago, which slowed down my gaming life considerably, and got back to university a few weeks ago, so things have been rather hectic. I've been learning to use a mouse left handed to compensate, which is a strange experience :P

I've basically decided against buying RE5 for a while. All the focus on co-op spoils it a little for me (I'm very tied to RE as a single-player experience). I'd love to play the demo with you sometime, but I need to get a headset for the 360 first :P My online gaming has always been confined to the PC, so I'm throwing cash at Dawn of War II in the meantime.

Berserker said...

I was just looking over your profile the other day, sort of wondering where you were during this fine time of year.

RE5 is completely playable without a headset if you ask me, well, based on the demo. Many people might be shocked to hear that I actually like to play the game without a headset. To me the experience is more immerssive without a headset and I lose some focus and overall concentration while talking or listening to someone else while playing a game.

With that said, I'm not totally against using them if the other player wants to, but that's really the way I feel about them for RE5... again, based on the demo.

...

I make it sound like I hate talking to people, don't I? Way to go, Kev! :p

Sentox said...

Hey, I'm not going to object. I'm under no illusions about my droning New Zealand accent anyway :P

I can see what you mean though. I imagine over the course of the game, you'd want to a headset just to make occasional conversation, but for set pieces like the demo, it'd probably be more immersive to not have Sheva telling you "awesome shot bro!" in a man's voice, haha.

I'd love to play a few rounds with you next week, although I'd imagine you'll be consumed with the full release :)

Berserker said...

I have this bad habit of forgetting to do certain things when using a headset over Xbox LIVE that I normally do automatically while playing normally. For instance, giving my partners their ammo for their gun at certain points. Every now and then, I forget that normally though.

I guess it goes to show that I'm one of these older gamers still not used to voice chat during a game. :)

Brian said...

Don't worry but, that makes two of us ;)

Anyhoo, I just asked about that because my HL2 mod is coming out in a week or so. It's not much but if you already had the game I'd ask you to try it out (even if the game is <5 minutes long, hehe).

Berserker said...

I always wondered that about you. :)

Well, just a few more hours here for me until the moment. Good god this has been the longest wait ever. xD

Brian said...

Do you think there's any chance that the big C is being too obvious about masked-beak person being Jill? The first giveaway was when you see the masked person's lips, which are 100% feminine.

Maybe you've already gotten far enough to know if I'm right or not, but that's my guess on the truth, far and AWAY. (only on 2-2 right now, btw).

There's nothing quite like setups and betrayals >_>

Berserker said...

Capcom annoys me with how much they show in their trailers when it comes to a new RE. Why didn't they keep Jill's involvment a complete secret in RE5?

As for Bird Lady, you'll find out soon enough. Evenone will. :D

I've already beaten it on PS3. Fantastic game!

Berserker said...

*everyone

Damn typos ruining my punchlines...

Brian said...

Haha, I didn't know Jill would be involved until I started the game, so everything is an (intended) surprise for me. I am now having a couple doubts though from one of the trailers where in-tube Jill opens here eyes... and if she's in a tube then she can't be bird lady. Which means bird lady is likely Ada instead. I mean, it HAS to be someone people would know because there's no reason to cover her face otherwise.

Out of playable characters that means Jill, Rebecca, Ada and Claire. Claire we know has been doing her own thing, and she MIGHT be hooking up with Tricell in order to do some sniffing, but I don't see her doing that. Ada we already know is just following the money, which is a reason for her to hide herself from Wesker but I think he'd be able to smell her perfume from a mile away. Rebecca is too obscure IMO. Jill fits just because of all the hints thus far, and it's totally likely that (gag) Wesker's done some crap to force her hand.

I dunno. I just got to 4-1 last night, but with my finals, I won't be playing all too much. This far in the game, I really have to say that if it wasn't for the emotional investment in the characters, Gears has spoiled me in terms of adrenaline-producing shooters. Not that RE5 isn't fun or a good game... It's just that it's already been outdone.

Berserker said...

Ah, I still haven't played either Gears, so I wouldn't know. I abosultely love the new control scheme now with the sidestep feature. It's so easy to control the character to me.

Right when an enemy tosses a weapon or performs a vertical attack I just move the right analog to the right or left to move out of the way. It feels good! It's kind of hilarious when I do that while playing co-op and the gamer behind me gets hit with the same weapon I just dodged. Type B and D controls for the win!

Report to me when you beat it.

I've still got to go through the Xbox 360 version myself. Haven't even started it yet. I might just co-op with a person on my friends list the first time through. The AI for Sheva kind of ruins the experience at times - that's my only real gripe with the game.

Brian said...

I wouldn't call strafing a feature... :P

It's gonna be a long while before I beat it, unless the game ends in about 4 more hours or so :/ I don't see myself spending much time on any games until next month probably, and even then it'll just be socially, not necessarily RE5. Too busy!

You really owe it to yourself to try out Gears at some point... after your RE craze has died down a little of course :) The entire package is what makes it, kinda like RE; while at the moment the story isn't as rich as RE, the gameplay is very solid and the second one did actually convince me that Epic means to create a working universe as they continue to develop the franchise.

Sentox said...

It's a strange little circle of life. Epic has said how Resident Evil 4 was a major influence in creating Gears of War, and now RE5 is trying to be Gears of War 2 :P

I'm not really happy with the final product. Some specific things bug me (boss fights with mounted miniguns? Seriously?) but overall, it just lacks the atmosphere that RE4 had. I have no problem with the series changing focus, but it's just not been done well enough. In this genre, it's just an average game with higher-than-average production values.

Brian said...

Not that I've beaten the game (10 minutes from now will be the first time I've touched it in a week) but that's exactly how I feel about it so far. Average game, just really good production + it's RE. Here's to hoping Jill don't break my heart :P

Berserker said...

I have my own complaints with it (AI partner and so-so cover system) but overall I like it quite a bit. It doesn't really tend to drag as much as RE4 started to on my first time through. Part of that is due to the story though.

What do you two think about The Mercenaries mode now? Well, once each of you has unlocked it. I really enjoy the co-op sessions with a friend; Duo play makes me not even want to play it single player.

Franz said...

I don't think that RE5 is just average. I mean if you look at the games release list for 2009, there are not that much games that could reach RE5. Killzone 2 is great and maybe better than RE5, Uncharted 2 is also a game I'm waiting for. Ok maybe RE5's single player is not as good as Dead Space concerning atmosphere, but coop rocks. I love RE5 :-)

Brian said...

Perhaps the reason why we call it average is because we all hold it at a pretty high standard. I mean, it's Resident Evil, a series that for a long time followed the traditional Capcom formula of rehashing. For them to do it again is no surprise, but thus, keeps the game in the same place.

Berserker said...

I'll have up a full review in a few days. Just got finished with it a few moments ago.

I don't really mind that it still basically retains the same gameplay of RE4. In my opinion, the improvements that they made (more melee attacks, different control setups, etc) keep it feeling fresh yet familiar, which is basically all I was looking for.

I'd be slightly afraid of another big change to the series. It would be nice to have more of a scary atmosphere like the original and REmake had once again though.

Brian said...

I guess that's what the newer survival horrors are for? :)

I did finished the game today. It ended on a flat note IMO... Fun game, but like I said I think we judge harshly because it's RE. The fact that you know who didn't actually die pisses me off to no end, and is further proof that thus far Japanese games that rely heavily on Japanese methodology will remain predictable :/ After talking to a few people at GDC, it seems like that trend will only start to change now, ever slowly, but at the cost of their native audience. Very sad :(

We'll see if Platinum Games does to have a trick up their sleeve. I played a little over an hour of MadWorld already so far, and it's a lot of bloody fun. However, the plot, as macabre as it may be, still seems a little predictable as well. We shall see :D
